Release Date: Jan 28, 2010

Mr Jamal Uddin of Newent Tandoori; Broad Street, Newent pleaded guilty to 4 offences under the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006 at Gloucester Magistrates Court on Friday 22 January 2010.

Mr Uddin admitted that he had ‘failed to maintain his premises in good condition and that the kitchen equipment and utensils were not maintained in good condition. He also admitted that he had failed to implement a suitable food safety system which he is required to do to keep the food safe’ Mr Uddin also failed to comply with a Food Hygiene Improvement Notice requiring him to improve his food safety management system by a certain date.

Mr Uddin was fined £1650 for the offences and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £15. Mr Uddin was also ordered to pay costs of £500 to the Council.

Environmental Health Officers from the Forest of Dean District Council carried out a routine inspection at Newent Tandoori in May 2009. Following this initial inspection Mr Uddin was issued with seven food hygiene improvement notices. One of which he failed to comply with.

Roger Garbett, Environmental Services Manger said “ We provided Mr. Uddin with advice, the opportunity to improve and sufficient time to make improvements and implement a robust food safety management system. However during an arranged return visit it became clear that he had failed to do so. Mr Uddin failed to carry out the necessary steps to protect public health“

“Since the court date, Environmental Health Officers have re-visited Mr Uddin at Newent Tandoori. He has improved the condition of the premises, which are now good and comply with the Hygiene Regulations. The improvement in conditions are reflected in the premises achieving a Three Star “Scores on the Doors” rating.

Mr Garbett concluded, “We work hard to help food business in the Forest of Dean maintain the standards laid down in the Hygiene Regulation and most of the business are exceptionally well run. However in the few cases where a business repeatedly fails to meet the basic legal requirements, more formal action is likely to result to ensure the public is protected.
