Crime And Disorder Reduction Partnership

Our aim is to enhance the quality of life by working in partnership with the community to reduce crime and the fear of crime within the Forest of Dean.

Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership logoCrime and the fear of crime are very real issues for many people especially the elderly and vulnerable groups. Even in an area of low crime, like the Forest of Dean, crime, disorder, drugs and anti-social behaviour can have a huge effect on resident’s quality of life. The Forest of Dean Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership has been set up to help reduce and tackle crime in our area.

The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 recognised that in order to combat crime and disorder in our communities, all agencies needed to work together to ensure that their policies and actions did not impact on the work of others and increase crime. For example, Planning Departments now consider the crime impact any new development would have on it’s surroundings and they can recommend alterations such as additional lighting to ensure that the new buildings do not increase crime levels. The Act also encouraged agencies to engage with local communities to ensure their crime and disorder concerns were considered and incorporated in any crime reduction work. This approach encourages us all to contribute to crime reduction and ensures a better use of our resources.

Following a review of the partnership provisions of the Crime & Disorder Act 1998 and the Police Reform Act 2004, CDRP's now no longer have an obligation to produce a three year crime reduction strategy. Instead CDRP's will produce Strategic Assessments, which aim to identify current and possible future crime, disorder and substance misuse issues from sound evidence and robust analysis thereby moving partnerships to a more intelligence-led business planning approach.

The Forest of Dean Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership brings together a wide range of organisations that work together to produce and implement our local Priorities. Following on from the successes achieved over the life of the last three-year crime reduction strategy new priorities for the CDRP for 2008 / 2009 has now been set.

The priorities for the current year (2008-2009) are as follows:

Priority 1: Anti Social behaviour (understanding and addressing problems)

Priority 2: Crimes of local concern (includes acquisitive crime, domestic abuse, criminal damage etc)

Priority 3: Drug and Alcohol misuse (education, enforcement and treatment issues)

Priority 4: Road Safety Issues (working to reduce serious and fatal accidents within our district)

Priority 5: Perception of Crime (reducing communities fear of crime)

Priority 6: Building Stronger Communities (by maximising the opportunities of engaging with local communities)

To deliver these priorities the CDRP has established four thematic task groups;

  • Anti-social Behaviour Task Group
  • Forest and Gloucester Hate Crime and Incidents Action Group
  • Substance Action Group
  • Crimes of Local Concern Task Group

These task groups bring together a number of agencies including the Police, drug and alcohol agencies, Gloucestershire County Council, Youth Offending Team, Fire and Rescue Service, and members of the Health Service to work together to help reduce crimes across our area.
